Some of you may already have eReaders and buy eBooks and most of you will have heard these terms but might not be sure what they really mean. You might ask ‘why do I need to know? It’s new fangled technology and not relevant to me!’ We will try to answer that question?

As an ExPat myself I know how frustrating it is not being able to buy English books abroad, and being an avid reader makes it worse. We now have Amazon.co.uk where we can order paper books for delivery to Portugal, which is great, but what about when we are travelling?

When we go on holiday or when friends visit, most people like to take books to read. The problem is that we want to take more than one book but we also need to keep our luggage to a minimum (thanks to restrictions by low-cost airlines). So we have a dilemma that we can’t afford the space to take 3 or 4 books or bring new ones back with us; the space is needed for cheese, marmite, salad cream or bacon!!

An eReader is an electronic gadget that allows you to read eBooks and it has a special ‘e-ink’ screen which is very different from a computer screen. This technology allows you to read the screen even in bright sunlight, and has an incredibly long battery life.

eBooks are electronic books; computer copies of books that you download and read on your eReader. An eReader can store a 1000+ books so you will never be short of a good read ever again.

Not all eReaders are the same; and some companies are incorrectly marketing Media Tablets as eReaders. I can see that this is an important step forward in technology; like CDs, laptops and mobile phones were only a short while ago. We have researched eBooks and eReaders and have put everything together in an easy to follow website for our readers. We will try to give you information about the best eReaders for you, and what to look for so you can make an informed choice.

Some of you will have heard of the Amazon Kindle, and some of you will already have them; but many Expats cannot buy these from the UK, you need a UK address connected to your credit card. If you have a Kindle you may be restricted in where you can buy books because of publishing licenses. You can only buy Kindle eBooks from Amazon, and they will not work on other eReaders, so if you want to update in the future you will be stuck with Kindle. However, for those of you still spending time in the UK, the Kindle could be the best option as the choice of ebooks is huge and the Kindle is one of the best eReaders.

Many eReaders allow you to buy books from other stores and even access thousands of FREE eBooks. Some also let you copy music and photos to your eReader. Why not look at some of the alternatives like the BeBook or the Nook or something that is more flexible and available worldwide.

Check out the rest of the site where we review the best online eBookshops and the best eReaders and open up a new world of reading for travellers and overseas residents.

We do the research so that you don't have to.

Happy Reading!
